Surfing in Lagos

The West Coast of the Algarve is very famous for it's surfing beaches Sagres, Amado, Bordeira and Arrifana to name just a few.

But Lagos and the South coast beaches have some great waves on their day! Porto de Mos and Meia Praia in Lagos have some nice waves for beginner surfing and also surfers with higher levels of ability.
Both beaches can have steep take offs and fast peeling waves but also small manageable peaks for improvers and intermediate surfers.
As you travel further along the coast( towards Sagres) Burgau can have really fun waves depending on swell direction, fast peeling rights and lefts can be caught. Drive a little further on Praia das Cabanas Velhas, Salema, Zavial and Barranco are also good on their day!

Although in the peak surf school months we run our surfing lessons on the West coast of the Algarve usually at Bordeira, if the swell is up on the South coast we are very keen to surf in Lagos at Porto de Mos and Meia Praia as it cuts down on travel time and of course is more environmentally friendly!

How does the South coast get waves? In the winter big swells on the West coast rap around the Cap Saint Vincent headland at Sagres and waves reach the South coast beaches. The swells come in at an angle and this can create good peaks.
The other way that south coast beaches receive swell is when there are low pressures further south in the Atlantic which sends waves up to the Algarve, the great thing about south swell is that warm water is brought up and can drastically improve the temperature of the sea!

So Lagos is a great place to learn to Surf!Happy
